Michael was born and raised in Tennessee. He started painting at a young age and after graduating the Maryland Institute College of Art (Painting 2010) he moved to Arizona. He spent the subsequent years working in land conservation and trail construction around the Southwest. Through those experiences he was able to spend countless days and nights in the wilderness of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico.
He briefly moved back to Tennessee in 2013 to complete a 1000+ mile thru hike of the state. When he moved back to Flagstaff in 2015, he started painting the landscapes that had left such an impression on him. Michael finds his locations through hiking and trips to conservation sites. He works primarily with acrylic gouache on panel and his paintings often live in the space between drawing and painting.
